Looking for help

The park like setting around the Marlborough meetinghouse is maintained by a very small Quaker congregation that is pleased to share its grounds. Unlike other local historic buildings, this one is not owned by the township. Unlike several other Quaker Meetings, this Meeting has no endowment. Costs are borne by members of the Meeting. Unfortunately, there are times when the expense of historic upkeep poses a particular challenge. At these times, the Meeting has turned to its friends and the surrounding community. It has not been disappointed.

This is another such time. The Meeting is currently facing two major maintenance projects that have been deferred for many years.

The first of these projects concerns the interior walls and ceiling of the meetinghouse. For as long as can be remembered, they have been in need of attention. The cracks and peelings are now quite extraordinary.

The second project is the iron fence that borders the cemetery. Several years ago, it was damaged by a falling tree. Examining other parts of the fence more, it becomes clear that an entire section of the fence consists of a patchwork of aged and mismatched pieces which has reached the end of its useful life.

The cost to address the interior walls will be around $9,000. We estimate approximately $20,000 to replace the entire section of damaged fencing. We do not have enough in our capital reserve to address everything but if we can raise $15,000 it will go a long way to help with completing both projects.
